In Latvian, there are two options in the grammatical category of gender: masculine or feminine.
When talking about people or animals, the grammatical gender of the word often agrees with the sex of the person or an animal. There is no such a connection for inanimate objects or abstract concepts.
There are also a few words that define people, and being mostly grammatically attributed to feminine gender, they can refer to both males and females. These are the nouns of the common gender.
