Moods

Besides the ordinary (indicative) mood, Latvian verbs have several other moods that change the attitude towards the action.

ConditionalThe conditional mood (vēlējuma izteiksme) expresses a wish or a hypothetical action — English ‘would’.ImperativeThe imperative mood (pavēles izteiksme) gives commands and requests. The singular form usually equals the present-tense stem; the plural adds -iet.RelativeThe relative (oblique) mood (atstāstījuma izteiksme) reports what someone else has said, without vouching for it — English ‘is said to / reportedly’.DebitiveThe debitive mood (vajadzības izteiksme) expresses necessity — English ‘must / have to’.
