Pronouns

Pronouns are the words that point to things without directly naming them. Pronouns are often used to replace the nouns, adjectives, or numerals and thus help to avoid repetitions of them.

PersonalPersonal pronouns are divided into three persons and two numbers.ReflexiveThe reflexive pronoun sevis reflects back to the person or the object.PossessivePossessive pronouns (piederības vietniekvārdi) show that something belongs to someone.DemonstrativeDemonstrative pronouns (norādāmie vietniekvārdi) point to a particular thing: šis (this) for something near, and tas (that) for something farther away. They decline by gender, number, and case.InterrogativeInterrogative pronouns (jautājamie vietniekvārdi) are used to ask questions.RelativeRelative pronouns (attieksmes vietniekvārdi) join a subordinate clause to the main clause. They use the same words as the interrogative pronouns: kas, kurš, and kāds.IndefiniteIndefinite pronouns (nenoteiktie vietniekvārdi) point to a person or thing without naming it precisely.DefiniteDefinite pronouns (noteiktie vietniekvārdi) refer to the whole of something or to each member of a group.NegativeNegative pronouns (noliedzamie vietniekvārdi) deny the existence of a person, thing, or quality.
