Personal pronouns

Personal pronouns are divided into three persons and two numbers.

1 person

2 person

Jūs is also be used as a polite form to refer to one person. In letters, Tu and Jūs are spelt with a capital letter.

3 person

The plural third-person pronouns have different masculine and feminine forms. For the mixed group of people, the masculine form is used.

⚠️ Notice that viņš, viņa, viņi, and viņas should only refer to humans or personified things. For animals or inanimate objects, the following pronouns are used: tas, tā, tie, and tās. This is not always the case in colloquial speech. These four pronouns can also be used to refer to humans.
