A verb is negated by attaching the prefix ne- to it. The prefix is written together with the verb.
Es lasu — Es nelasu
I read — I do not read
Viņš ir — Viņš nav
He is — He is not
Man ir — Man nav
I have — I do not have
⚠️ Latvian requires double negation: a negative pronoun or adverb must be accompanied by a negated verb.
Es neko nezinu.
I don’t know anything.
Neviens nenāca.
No one came.
