Syntax

Syntax (sintakse) deals with how words combine into phrases and sentences.

Because Latvian marks grammatical roles with cases, word order is relatively free and is mainly used to highlight information.

Word orderThe neutral word order is subject – verb – object (SVO), but it can be changed for emphasis without losing the meaning, because the cases show who does what.QuestionsYes/no questions are formed by adding the particle vai at the start of the sentence; the word order stays the same.NegationA sentence is negated by adding the prefix ne- to the verb.
